2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field official schedule announced

INDIANAPOLIS -- USATF, the United States Olympic Committee and TrackTown USA have announced the official release of the competition schedule for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track and Field.

Eight days, 40 events and countless dreams will be realized as the qualifying event for the “world’s toughest team to make” are set to take place July 1-10 in Eugene, Oregon. This will be the sixth time U.S. Olympic Trials for Track and Field will be staged at historic Hayward Field. The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be held August 5-21 with track and field taking center stage August 12-21.

One day before action starts in Eugene, the men’s and women’s 20k race walks will take place on the streets of Salem, Oregon. Maria Michta-Coffey leads the Olympic hopefuls in a loop course created to highlight the event. Admission to this special event is free and open to the public.

Friday, July 1 kicks off with the highly contested men’s shot put as World Champion Joe Kovacs, two-time Olympian Reese Hoffa and more meet in the throwing circle. The men’s 10,000m will complete the evening’s events as American record holder Galen Rupp is expected to lead the field. On the track, the women’s 400m 1st round will see Olympic 200m gold medalist and World 400m champion Allyson Felix set her sights on her second one-lap USATF title and fourth Olympic team. The 200-meter finals for men and women will be held Saturday, July 9.

Saturday, July 2 is the first full day of competition with world record holder Ashton Eaton stepping onto the track to defend his Olympic title. Eaton’s rain-drenched 1500m was perhaps the signature moment of the trials event in 2012, when he became the second decathlete to break the 9,000-point mark in a then-world record, 9,039 points.

The schedule includes a primary rest day on July 6, but competition won’t go silent. The men’s and women’s hammer throws take center stage at Hayward Field that day, with admission free and open to the public.

Full competition resumes on Thursday, July 7 with the qualifying rounds of men’s and women’s 400m hurdles along with the finals of women’s shot and triple jump. The men’s and women’s 1500m rounds also begin Thursday, with Jenny Simpson vying for her third Olympic squad up against Beijing teammates Olympian Shannon Rowbury, Lauren Johnson and Kerri Gallagher for just three spots. For the men’s metric mile, Hayward faithful should see close races between Matthew Centrowitz, Leo Manzano, Bernard Lagat and a host of others meeting to face off before the final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

Olympic gold medalist Jenn Suhr will vie for the top spot in women’s pole vault action Friday, July 8. Finals of the women’s 100m hurdles and the men’s discus will also be contested.

The women’s heptathlon rounds out the last two days at Hayward Field, along with finals contested in the 200m, 110m hurdles and the 5000m, and on the field with the women’s pole vault, men’s triple jump, women’s javelin and men’s high jump.
