ALEXANDRIA, Virginia -- On a brisk Sunday on the George Washington Parkway, Runyon the Parrot led the charge at the .US National 12K Kids’ Fun Run, teaching young runners the importance of being both physically and fiscally healthy.

Runyon, the mascot of Burke & Herbert Bank, was the official starter of the ½-mile race and each young participant received a piggy bank, a finisher medal and a Burke & Herbert balloon after crossing the finish. Children enjoyed running alongside Runyon Sunday, and Runyon waited for every participant to finish before he crossed the finish line himself.

Established in 1852, Burke & Herbert Bank is the oldest bank in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the oldest continuously operating bank in the Washington, D.C. community. Three of the Bank’s branches were located on the inaugural race course, and the flagship branch is near the current course which runs through historic Alexandria, Virginia.

The culminating event of the USATF Running Circuit and USATF’s flagship road race, the .US National 12K was held Nov. 15. The event featured community 12 km and 1 Mile races, a ½ mile kids’ fun run, as well as the .US National 12K elite race offering $100,000 in prize money, and the USATF Masters Championships for over-40 runners.
