EUGENE, Oregon -- Three multi-time USATF champions returned to the top of the podium Thursday and one collegian continued his runway reign, as competition at the 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships kicked off from Historic Hayward Field.

The men’s long jump was one for the record books, as seven-time NCAA Champion Marquis Dendy captured his first USATF Outdoor title. Dendy bookended his series Thursday with personal bests, leaping an all-conditions best 8.68m/28-5.75 (+3.7) to start the competition. On his final jump of the afternoon, Dendy turned in a new wind-legal personal best of 8.39m/27-6.50. Dendy battled with Jeff Henderson (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Mike Hartfield throughout the afternoon, as Henderson and Hartfield turned in jumps of 8.44m/27-8.25 and 8.42m/27-7.50 to round out the long jump medalists. Hartfield’s leap just knocked Olympian and Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin (Lubbock, Texas) out of medal contention, as Goodwin returned to Hayward Field and the long jump runway with a mark of 8.37m/25-5.50. The trio all hold IAAF A standards and will represent Team USA in Beijing.

Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) won her sixth USATF Outdoor title with a toss of 20.02m/65-8.25, nearly reaching her PR. Carter led the competition from start to finish, out-throwing her competitors by nearly four feet. Fellow Olympian Tia Brooks (Grand Rapids, Michigan) went from sixth to second on her final throw of the day, launching the shot 18.93m/62-1.25. Jeneva Stevens (Carbondale, Illinois) rounded out the medalists, turning in a mark of 18.84m/61-9.25 as all three throwers punched their tickets to Beijing.

Molly Huddle (Providence, Rhode Island) took home yet another USATF Outdoor title, taking the women’s 10,000 meters in 31:39.20. Huddle battled with Shalane Flanagan (Portland, Oregon) and Emily Infeld (Portland, Oregon) throughout the race, as Flanagan led for more nearly 5,000 meters. Despite the heat, the pace was honest, and Huddle turned up the heat with just a few laps remaining. With Hayward Field on its feet, Huddle ran a scorching bell lap to pull away from the Bowerman Track Club teammates and take the win. Flanagan and Infeld finished with nearly identical times, going 2-3 in 31:42.29 and 31:42.60, respectively.

Galen Rupp (Portland, Oregon) earned his seventh straight USATF Outdoor title, winning the men’s 10,000 meters in 28:11.61. Biding his time while the lead pack kept a good pace, Rupp made his move with just a few laps remaining. Recent USATF Athlete of the Week winner Ben True (West Lebanon, New Hampshire) kept Rupp in check throughout much of the latter part of the race, but Rupp’s kick was intact despite the warm conditions. True took the silver with his time of 28:14.26, while Hassan Mead (Eugene, Oregon) closed over the final lap to take home the bronze in 28:16.54.

Trayvon Bromell (St. Petersburg, Florida) was on fire in the men’s 100 meters Thursday, torching the track with a new personal best of 9.84. Bromell easily won the final prelim and his time makes him the fourth-best U.S. performer all-time and ties him as the 10th best performer in the world over 100m all-time. The fastest time of the day came from Remontay McClain (Victorville, California), who ran a windy 9.82 (+4.9) to win the third heat.

On the women’s side, it was a trio of Ducks that wowed the hometown crowd Thursday, as Jenna Prandini (Clovis, Calif.) and English Gardner (Los Angeles) won their windy heats in 10.90 and 10.92, respectively. Prandini’s Oregon teammate, Jasmine Todd (Chandler, Arizona), was equally impressive, coming up just short of her prelim win with a photo finish against Olympic champion Carmelita Jeter (Los Angeles). Jeter just edged Todd by three-thousandths of a second, 10.866-10.869.

Sean Furey (Metheuen, Massachusetts) nabbed his third straight men’s javelin title with a new lifetime best of 83.08m/272-8. Furey saved his best throw for last, moving from second to first on his final attempt. Furey is the only IAAF A standard holder in the men’s javelin.

Kibwe Johnson (Kamloops, British Columbia) took home his fifth USATF Outdoor Championship Thursday, winning the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 76.95m/252-5. Johnson, along with fellow USATF Outdoor medalists Conor McCullough (Conoga Park, California) and A.G. Kruger (Ashland, Ohio), has the IAAF A standard and the trio will represent their country this summer at the IAAF World Championships. McCullough continued a stellar 2015 campaign with his throw of 76.09m/249-7, having won the NCAA title at Hayward Field two weeks ago. Kruger nabbed the bronze with his throw of 76.01m/249-4.
