Centenarian wins USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Don Pellmann wins USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week after breaking five age-group world masters records at the San Diego Senior Olympics at San Diego Mesa College on Sunday, Sept. 20.
 
Pellmann (Santa Clara, California) competed in six events in the 90-plus age category at the San Diego Senior Olympics, where he set the first age-group world record in the long jump, ran 26.99 to break a three-year-standing world record in the 100m by three seconds, and he threw 6.56m/21-6.25 to defeat the shot put world record. He also set a new PB and world record in the discus, with a best of 14.86m/48-9, after becoming the first man over age 100 to clear a height in high jump and compete in the long jump.
 
Other notable performances include:

  • Molly Huddle (Providence, Rhode Island) won her fourth consecutive USATF 5 km Championship in Providence, finishing the CVS Downtown 5K in 15:12 in her hometown.
  • David Torrence (Malibu, California) became the men’s USATF 5 km Champion, finishing in 13:56.
  • Allie Ostrander (Soldotna, Alaska) won the junior women’s race at the 31st World Mountain Running Championships in Wales, where she bested the field by 38 seconds to take the win in 19:44.
  • Levi Thomet (Kodiak, Alaska) won the first U.S. junior men’s medal in World Mountain Running Championships history, when he finished the 5.53 mile course in 35:50 for silver.
  • Harvey Lewis (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the men’s USATF 24-Hour Championships, completing 175 laps for 157.7 miles.
  • Jenny Hoffman (Vancouver, Canada) was the women’s 24-Hour victor, finishing fourth overall after completing 153 laps for total mileage of 138.37. ­­
