Masters Invitationals at USATF Indoor Championships look to set World & U.S. records

BOSTON -- The men’s masters 1,500 meters and women’s masters 300 meters at the 2015 USATF Indoor Championships look to be record-breakers, as both events will take place as invitationals on Sunday, March 1. The Masters Men’s 1,500m is at 2:35 PM and the Masters Women’s 300 is at 2:50 PM.

“It’s going to be an amazing field - the Women’s 300 field will be really good and the Men’s could produce two World records,” said Mark Cleary, USATF Masters Invitationals Chair. “Olympian John Trautmann just broke the Indoor 45-49 Mile record on Feb 14, 2015 with a 4:12.33. The record was held by Tony Young and Tony is the current Indoor world record holder for 45-49 1500m with a time of 3:57.91. John has a great shot at breaking that record on March 1st at the Reggie Lewis Center,” Cleary said.

Trautmann’s list of individual accomplishments is immense. He was an Olympian, and won the ’92 Olympic trials in the 5000 Meter Run (13:40.30) over Bob Kennedy. Trautmann was a national champion in 1990 in the outdoor 5000m, highlighting his domination in the 5000m during his time with the Blue & Gray. He was also the runner-up in the indoor 5000m, an event in which he holds the Georgetown and BIG EAST records, at the 1991 NCAA Championship. He won the BIG EAST Indoor 5000m title four-times, only one of seven conference athletes to accomplish that feat in any event, and the conference outdoor 5000m title in 1987, 1990 and 1991. After graduation, he advanced to the semifinals of the 5000m at the 1992 Olympic Games.
