Redemption for Jenny Simpson at New Balance Indoor Grand Prix

BOSTON -- Jenny Simpson brought the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix to an exciting close on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College.
 
With two laps remaining in the New Balance women’s two mile, Simpson (Boulder, Colorado) extended her lead for a confident win in 9:18.35 to set a new American Record. 
 
In the men’s 1,000m, Matthew Centrowitz (Eugene, Oregon) finished in 2:17.00 for a new meet record ahead of Pat Casey (Eugene, Oregon) in 2:18.30 and Eric Sowinski (Iowa City, Iowa) in 2:19.12. Centrowitz’s time is the second-fastest ever by an American.
 
Trell Kimmons (Hernando, Mississippi) won the 60m final with a U.S.-leading 6.51 to eclipse the 6.52 set just one hour prior by Mike Rodgers (Round Rock, Texas). Jamaican Asafa Powell (6.52) and American Sean McClean (6.53) rounded out the top-three.
 
Tiffany Townsend (Killeen, Texas) won the women’s 300m in 36.74 after overcoming a leading Natasha Hastings (Locust Grove, Georgia) down the final stretch. Hastings finished second in 36.80 and Jessica Beard (College Station, Texas) was third in 37.32.
 
Nike Oregon Project teammates Treniere Moser and Mary Cain finished top-two in the women’s 1,000m. With Cain leading into the final turn, Moser made a strong kick to take over the lead and finish in in 2:37.86 to Cain’s 2:38.25.
 
Picking up field event victories on the women’s side were 2014 USATF Indoor Champion Mary Saxer (Boston, Massachusetts), who went up and over 4.50m/14-9 in pole vault, and World Indoor champion Chaunté Lowe (Loganville, Georgia) clearing 1.88m/6-2 in high jump.
 
The New Balance women’s team of Sarah Brown (Knoxville, Tennessee) Mahagony Jones (State College, Pennsylvania) Megan Krumpoch (Newton, Massachusetts) and Brenda Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) set a DMR World Record by more than eight seconds after Martinez reeled in Nicole Tully of the New York All-Stars over the final 200. Martinez let Tully move away with two laps to go before she responded on the final circuit to cross the line at 10:42.57, clocking 4:27.77 on her 1,600m leg. Tully’s 4:28.14 helped the New York squad to a 10:42.79, the second-fastest time ever.
 
Bernard Lagat’s (Tucson, Arizona) second place finish in the men’s 3,000m set a Masters World Record by 13 seconds, dropping the previous 8:01.44 to 7:48.33.
 
Ryan Whiting (Port Matilda, Pennsylvania) and Christian Cantwell (Columbia, Missouri) went one-two in shot put, with Whiting’s world-leading 21.43m/70-3.75 defeating Cantwell’s 20.83m/68-4.25.
