Team USA wins gold at APA Pan American Cross Country Cup

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia -- In dominating fashion Team USA’s senior men, led by first-place finisher Maksim Korolev, helped the Americans to team gold at the inaugural APA Pan American Cross Country Cup, Sunday, Feb. 22
Korolev (Harrisonville, Missouri) kicked in a late surge, earning individual gold with a 10 km finish of 28:21. Not far behind were Augustus Maiyo (Colorado Springs, Colorado) in third in 28:34 and Jonathan Grey (Minneapolis, Minnesota) in 28:39 for fourth. Overall the senior men placed three in the top five and five in the top 10 with Joseph Gray (Lakewood, Washington) in seventh in 29:06 and Gabriel Proctor in eighth in 29:17. The U.S. senior men scored 15 points for the win, defeating second-place Ecuador’s 52 points.
Team USA’s Kellyn Taylor (Flagstaff, Arizona) won individual silver in the senior women's 7 km, when she crossed in 21:33 to give the U.S. women a 21-point victory over next closest competitor Canada. In fifth place for the U.S. was Mattie Suver (Colorado Springs, Colorado) in 21:36. Rochelle Kanuho was sixth in 21:42, and Christine Babcock (Bend, Oregon) cracked the top 10, finishing in 22:03 for ninth.
Conner Mantz (Smithfield, Utah) was second among all junior men, clocking 19:13 for his silver medal. In all, Team USA turned in all top-10 finishes. John Dressel (Colbert, Washington) was fourth in 19:23; Eric Hamer (Monument, Colorado) finished sixth in 19:41; Fred Huxman (Seattle, Washington) crossed in eighth in 19:43 and Connor Hendrickson (Southlake, Texas) registered a ninth-place finish in 19:47. The junior men finished with 20 points to defeat Canada with 38 points.
The U.S. junior women earned 27 points for a second place overall, nipping at Canada's heels by only three points and edging out third place Peru by six. Katie Rainsberger (Colorado Springs, Colorado) was the the top American junior woman crossing in 16:44 for a close fifth place ahead of Rachel Koon (Arden, North Carolina) in 16:45 for sixth and Lauren Gregory (Fort Collins, Colorado) in seventh in 16:46. Megan Connell (Langhorne, Pennsylvania) was ninth in 16:52.
