BOSTON -- Olympic Champion Jenn Suhr, Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano, two-time World Championships medalist Matthew Centrowitz, and five-time Olympian Amy Acuff are among the stars expected to highlight the USATF Indoor Championships that begin Friday, February 27, and run through Sunday, March 1, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center at Roxbury Community College.
The championships are returning to the Reggie for the first time since 2009. Tickets and more information are available here.
Suhr, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the pole vault, will be seeking her 16th national title. At the 2013 indoor championships, she jumped 5.02m/16-5.50 to break the World Indoor Record, a mark she still holds. In competing at “The Reggie,” Suhr will be returning to the venue where she won her first USATF title in 2005, as an unknown.
Manzano, who won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, became the first American to win an Olympic medal at 1500 meters since Jim Ryun in 1968; Centrowitz won World Championships medals at 1500 meters in 2011 (bronze) and 2013 (silver), as well as placing fourth in the 2012 Olympics; and Acuff, 39, will be competing in her first major high-jump competition in several years as she begins a quest to make her seventh U.S. Olympic team, in 2016.
Among other top athletes expected to contend for the title of 2015 USATF Indoor Champion are Chaunte Lowe, the 2012 World Indoor Champion and American record-holder in the high jump; Jason Richardson, the 2011 World Champion and 2012 silver medalist in the 110-meter hurdles; Erik Kynard, 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the high jump; Christian Cantwell, 2008 Olympic silver medalist and three-time World Champion in the shot put; and Tianna Bartoletta, 2005 World Champion in the long jump and 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 4x100-meter relay.
In addition, two athletes of special significance are planning a trip to Boston. Returning to his roots will be Casimir Loxsom, the American record-holder at 600 meters. Loxsom still holds the Reggie Lewis facility record at 600 meters from his New England Indoor Championships win in 2009 while competing for Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Conn. Alysia Montaño, a 2012 Olympian at 800 meters, will be competing in her first major competition since giving birth to her first child in August. Last June, Montaño made national headlines when she competed at the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships while almost eight months pregnant. More top athletes will be announced in the coming days.
The USATF Indoor Championships are the final stop of the 2015 USATF Indoor Championship Series. The event will air live on NBCSN with additional live coverage on USATF.TV. NBCSN will show races live airing from 4-6 p.m. ET while USATF.TV will show events starting at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday outside the TV window.
