Tremendous fields highlight HOKA ONE ONE Middle Distance Classic live on USATF.TV

LOS ANGELES -- Some of the best middle distance athletes in the country will take to the track on Thursday, May 14 as the USATF Championship Series heads to Los Angeles for the HOKA ONE ONE Middle Distance Classic. Held at Jack Kemp Stadium on the campus of Occidental College, general admission tickets are available at the gate for $10. Students and USATF members can purchase tickets for $5.

 

The HOKA ONE ONE Middle Distance Classic will air live on USATF.TV directly following the USATF 1 Mile Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Action from Twin Cities will begin at 8:50 p.m. ET and will continue through midnight ET with the HOKA ONE ONE Middle Distance Classic.

 

Thursday evening will be a night of fast times, as athletes will look to meet standards for this summer’s IAAF World Championships. A full list of declared athletes can be found on USATF.org.

Women’s 800 Meters

Reigning IAAF World Indoor champion and two-time World Relays gold medalist Chanelle Price leads the field for the women’s two-lap race and will take on the likes of Maggie Vessey, Phoebe Wright and Charlene Lipsey. Also competing in the women’s 800 meters are Oregon Project teammates Mary Cain, Treniere Moser and Shannon Rowbury, who are all also entered in the women’s 1,500 meters. Reigning USATF Female Athlete of the Year Jenny Simpson will put in speed work from her usual 1,500 meters, taking to the track in the women’s 800m.

 

Men’s 800 Meters

Two-time Olympian and reigning World silver medalist Nick Symmonds returns to the 800 meters for the first time since his final Diamond League race of 2013. He will be joined by teammates Mark Wieczorek and Casimir Loxsom, who is just coming off a gold medal at World Relays and is the American record holder indoors in the 600 meters. Newly-minted world record holder Brandon Johnson will also compete in the men’s 800 meters, along with USATF Champion indoors in the men’s mile, Matt Centrowitz.

 

Women’s 1,500 Meters

A precursor to USATF Outdoors, the women’s 1,500 meters is stacked. Cain, Moser and Rowbury are also entered in the field, as well as Olympians Emma Coburn and Morgan Uceny, as well as middle distance standouts Sarah Brown, Stephanie Charnigo, Gabe Grunewald and Cory McGee. Katie Mackey and Nicole Tully, who typically concentrate on the 5,000 meters, will both compete in the women’s 1,500 meters Thursday.

 

Men’s 1,500 Meters

Olympic silver medalist and 2015 Drake Relays champion Leo Manzano leads the men’s field in the 1,500 meters, with fellow Olympian Andrew Wheating and World Relays team members Robby Andrews and Kyle Merber adding depth to the field, as well as 2014 World Relays team members Pat Casey and David Torrence. Two-time NCAA Champion Mac Fleet will also look to challenge for the title Thursday, as well as Fifth Avenue Mile champion Jordan McNamara.

 

Women’s 5,000 Meters

Two-time Olympian Kara Goucher returns to the 5,000 meters on the track after a four-year hiatus and will face competition from USATF Running Circuit mainstay Kellyn Taylor. Former Dartmouth and Oregon standout Alexi Pappas adds to the field that also includes recent IAAF World Cross Country Championships participant Brie Felnagle.

 

Men’s 5,000 Meters

Two-time Olympian and reigning Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp is entered in the men’s 5,000 meters and faces stiff competition from an international field that includes Lawi Lalang, Cam Levins and Suguru Osako. Sam Chelanga will also look to impress Thursday, along with steeplechase Olympian Donn Cabral.

 

3,000-Meter Steeplechase

Olympian Shalaya Kipp leads the field in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and will take on standouts Nicole Bush and Ashley Higginson in the event. Ben Bruce highlights the men’s steeplechase field, which includes Rogue AC teammates Matt Cleaver and Austin Bussing.
