Twelve meet standard for Team USA on Day 1 of World Youth Trials

LISLE, Illinois -- On the first of two days at World Youth Trials, held in conjunction with USATF Hershey Youth National Outdoor Championships at Benedictine University, 12 athletes met their event standards and are eligible for nomination on Team USA, which is set to compete at World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, this summer.
 
USATF will send a team of up to 41 athletes who place first or second in their events, have met the IAAF entry standard, as well as the criteria listed here.
 
With two women meeting the 7:14 standard in the 2,000m steeplechase, Rylee Bowen took command of the race, leading wire to wire for a near 200-meter margin of victory. Bowen finished in 6:41.26 with Madison Boreman finishing in 7:03.75 for second place.
 
Zachary Shugart cleared 4.95m/16-02.75 for the men’s pole vault crown as runner-up Richard McWhorter cleared a height of 4.75m/15-07.00.
 
On the women’s side, Carson Dingler (Juliette, Georgia) dominated pole vault and posted the best mark of the day, going up and over 4.07m/13-04.25 to meet the standard for the roster with second-place finisher Rachel Baxter jumping 3.90m/12-09.50 to join her.
 
In men’s throws, Adrian Piperi and Isaiah Rogers are two shot putters meeting the standard after Piperi tossed 21.06m/69-01.25 and Rogers tossed 20.22m/66-04.25. Robert Colantonio threw 71.39m/234-03 in hammer.
 
In women’s throws, discus athletes Josephine Schaefer, who tossed  45.51m/149-04,
and Samantha Noennig, who threw 44.44m/145-10, have also surpassed the entry-required mark.  
 
In men’s javelin, Liam Christensen won by more than 7 meters, defeating the next closest competitor by 24 feet with his throw of 68.39m/224-04 to comfortably exceed the 65.00m/213-3 qualifying standard for the U.S. team.

World Youth Trials continue Wednesday at 7 a.m. with 5,000m race walk.
