Smith is a family practice and sports medicine physician who serves as Director of the Student Health Service at Marquette University and Head Medical Team Physician for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.  After a post-collegiate career running shorter distances, Smith embraced ultra running in 2002 and has enjoyed success in distances ranging from the 50 mile to 24-hour run.   She is a former 24-hour and 100Km National Champion.  She has had the privilege of representing the USA on two 24-Hour National Teams (2005, 2007) and is a five-time 100Km National Team member (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010).

In their own words…

Running achievement I am most proud of: Being part of the team bronze medal winning performance at the 2005 24-Hour World Challenge and the team gold medal winning performance at the 2009 100Km World Cup. Both occasions were true team efforts as each member faced their own challenges throughout these events, yet motivated and inspired one another, working together to achieve successful team finishes.

Why I run: I appreciate the simplicity and purity of self-propulsion. I’m blessed with the ability to run and possess a true love for the sport.

Future goals: To remain versatile and competitive across several ultra distances; to tackle more age-group records; but mostly to continue to enjoy my passion and accomplish balance between my professional and athletic goals.
