Upon Arrival in Honolulu

When you arrive in Honolulu, go to the airport baggage claim area and look for the Aloha Vacations representative, who will be holding a sign that reads "USA Masters." This person will be able to direct you to shuttle service, taxis, rental cars, etc. These individuals will be in the area beginning Monday, August 1.

If you have not already done so and wish to book shuttle transportation to the University of Hawaii dorms, the hotels in Waikiki, or elsewhere, call Dharma at Aloha Vacations (888-946-5264). Please note: the Aloha Vacations shuttle will take people to the UH dorms; most others will not. You also can talk to Dharma about booking sightseeing tours and other special packages or excursions.

On-Campus Parking

If you wish to park on campus, we recommend buying a 24-hour parking pass for $3 per day for each day you plan to be on campus. A 24-hour pass will enable you to leave your car on campus overnight in the parking garage (adjacent to the track and five minutes walk from the dorms). If you are staying off campus, it also will allow you to enter and leave the campus multiple times during the day. (Normal parking is $3 for each time you enter, with a 15-minute grace period).

To acquire a parking pass, take University Avenue north (toward the mountains) and turn right on Maile Way. At the gate guard, ask for directions to the parking office (it's very near Room 014 of the Queen Liliuoukalani Student Center, in the basement). You will have to pay $3 to enter, but will receive a refund when you exit with your pass(es).

The main parking garage is located in the athletic complex take University Avenue toward the mountains (mauka), then turn right on Dole street (first traffic light past the freeway). Turn right again at the first traffic light Lower Campus Road. This will take you to the parking gate and main garage.

Free Waikiki Shuttle

A shuttle bus will operate between Waikiki and the University of Hawaii on all days of the meet. This shuttle is provided free of charge to all athletes, officials and their families who are staying in Waikiki, or who wish to travel between the University and Waikiki. The shuttle will make stops in Waikiki one in front of the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel, one near the Ohana East Hotel, and one near the Ohana Maile Court. At UH, it will stop at the base of the hill, adjacent to the baseball stadium.

Vaulting Poles

Most airlines will transport vaulting poles to Hawaii for a fee, usually about $80 one-way. At least one airline (serving the southwest) apparently will transport them at no additional charge. Also, UPS will handle shipment of the poles -- it is a special request through the following numbers: 866-696-3656 (preferred) or 800-451-4550. The receiving address should be Hawaii Champs, 1493 Halekoa Drive, Honolulu, HI 96821. When you go to the UPS counter, the counter person may tell you they do not transport anything that long. But, in fact, they do and will, through their oversize package service. In addition, the LOC may be able to find rental poles in Hawaii for some individuals, but it will be on a case-by-case basis. If you would like to pursue this option, contact Vince Costello.

The Local Organizing Committee has made it as easy as possible to plan your vacation and book your accommodations. All you need to do is ask Aretha McLean, official USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships travel consultant. She can be reached at Aloha Vacations at 800-874-9300 or

Aretha can assist with hotel, airline, and excursion bookings. Her advice to you - book early, and relax! She knows a lot about travel to and from Hawaii, and she is learning about track & field. Give her a test and see how she does!

Also be advised that airfares between the West Coast and Hawaii fluctuate dramatically during the year. The West Coast-Hawaii route is one of the most heavily discounted in the world, and is characterized by heavy wholesale and group bookings. This makes it extremely difficult to obtain competitive individual or group air fares several months in advance of travel.

Accordingly, for airline travel Aretha recommends the following:

Frequent Flier Awards: If you got `em, use `em, but don't wait!
The West Coast-Hawaii route usually shows a higher percentage of frequent flier award tickets than any other route in the world; in fact, available frequent flier tickets often are booked far in advance of travel date. Participants planning to use frequent flier award miles for their Hawaii trip are urged to book those tickets as soon as possible, like NOW if you know your travel dates.

Individual Travel - Purchased Tickets: Good deals are available!
Participants traveling alone or with a small number of other family and friends are urged to begin searching for accommodations as soon as they know their travel dates. Ask Aretha for assistance. She can help find the best deal and book your travel at no additional cost to you. She may be able to find discounted wholesale prices that are not available on the internet.

Group Travel - Purchased Tickets: Ten or more makes a group, and savings.
Groups of 10 or more individuals traveling together, utilizing the same itinerary, often can get significant discounts on air fares. Again, Aretha McLean can assist in negotiating group rates for you.
